An alternative cancer therapy does not have to be the only cancer therapy employed to battle the disease. Both conventional and alternative therapies can work together to fight the disease and defeat it. Whether using alternative cancer therapy alone or conventional therapy, or a combination, one essential component for all of them is exercise. Some extravgant claims have been made for the efficacy of exercise in the fight against cancer. According to one person, a junior college professor of philosophy in Northern California, his bone cancer was completely cured because he began training for and participating in marathon runs. Sometimes there are just spontaneous remissions. Nevertheless, exercise is proving to be a significant factor in cancer treatment.

Until there is more conclusive evidence that exercise is a causal agent in the cure of cancer, it must still be included as a part of an alternative cancer therapy method. Studies are still being made on the subject, but the outlook is promising. In the seasonal periodical, Cure, two case studies are cited that support the theory that exercise can improve the chances of cancer survival. The astounding conclusions of these studies was that adding exercise to cancer theraphy reduced the probability of death of the cancer patients engaged in the study by 50 percent! The amount of exercise needed to get such a result was not much. Walking one hour a day for six days at a normal pace increased the likelihood of survival of colorectal cancer patients by 47 percent!

The second study had less discrete variables to consider. Activity versus inactivity were the independent variables, but what constituted activity or the lack of it was not fully defined. Still, the findings were encouraging. A 50 percent reduction in mortality of colorectal cancer patients was found. If exercise is still in the province of alternative cancer therapy, it goes far to recommend alternative therapy.

Then there is the study found in the Journal of Clinical Oncology of breast cancer patients who were put under a regimen of weight lifting exercise, a therapy component you will find in alternative cancer therapy. These patients lifted weights three times a week, doing two sets of eight to twelve repetitions in a single workout. As well as gaining increased body mass and strength, those on the program were found to complete their chemotheraphy treatment in greater numbers than those who were not on the program. In past decades, resistance exercise would have been considered part of an alternative cancer treatment, but not an essential component of conventional therapy; but with such findings, it is quickly being accepted today by cancer specialists as a necessary adjunct to conventional therapy.

If exercise is not being encouraged by your oncologist, engage in it yourself. The studies that have been performed have shown that the most significant obstacles to taking exercise out of the alternative cancer therapy category is that many patients do not sustain the schedule. This is to be expected, since conventional therapy is quiet gruelling in itself. That professor of philosophy claims that exercise as a cancer victim is an expression of your will to live. It's the battle of your life, for your life. You'll have to reach deep down inside to force yourself to be active, to strain those muscles and consume your energy, but then, in the end, when you're one of the 50 percent who survive, you'll have the reward that's worth all the pain and suffering. You'll have your life. Exercise, exercise as if your life depended on it. It very well might.

In the winter, it’s always the same thing.  The cold, dry weather can not only leave you feeling depressed and drained, it also takes a toll on your skin and hair.  But it is possible to have silky smooth hair all year long; you just need to take some extra steps to keep it healthy.  

If you want to keep your hair looking great through the winter, you’ve got to start early.  In the late autumn, get your hair trimmed and use a deep conditioning treatment.  This will help make your hair healthy to begin with and stop winter damage before it starts.  Just remember to maintain the health with regular trims and treatments through the winter.

In addition to special treatments, it will help to change your daily hair care routine as well.  During the winter, try alternating your regular conditioner with an extra moisturizing one or even a leave-in conditioner.  While you may benefit from simply switching, you’ll probably need to alternate daily or weekly to keep your hair from getting limp and weighed down by too much moisture.

During the cold winter months, you’re much more likely to blow-dry your hair to keep it from freezing when you step outside.  Take extra steps to keep your dryer (and other styling tools) from doing damage to your hair.  Always remember to apply styling products like sprays, gels, or conditioners that are specially designed to protect and repair styled hair. 

While treating your hair from the outside is great, it is also important to take steps to strengthen and soften it from the inside.  Vitamins like A, C, E, and various B vitamins can all help improve hair quality.  The best is to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and “good” fats, but you can boost your hair (and your health) by adding a daily multivitamin.

Just like your skin, your hair gets its moisture from your body.  That means that if you want to keep your hair hydrated, you have to keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water.  This will also help make your skin look better, leave you feeling better, and may even help you lose weight. 

If you want to keep your hair looking and feeling great, you can’t just pay attention to the hair, you also have to worry about your scalp.  Not only does an unhealthy scalp cause annoying problems like dandruff, your scalp is where the hair gets its moisture and life.  It the skin isn’t healthy, it’s likely that the hair isn’t either.  Be sure to use products that moisturize the skin and hair on your head.  Another good tip is to massage your scalp regularly to keep the roots stimulated and growing.

While many people love the holidays, that joy and cheer can quickly turn into stress and dread from all the holiday shopping, traffic jams, tree cutting, and the million other things you have to do this time of year.  If you don’t beat the stress, you’ll get worn down, and it can increase your chances of holiday depression and weight gain. 

You can reduce your stress before the holidays even start by making a to-do list.  Write down everything you need to get done and when.  Then - and here’s the hard part - start cutting.  Many of those family traditions started with family members who didn’t have to worry about today’s hectic schedules.  If you want to keep up with the modern world, you may have to give up some of your rituals.  Figure out what you want to keep and what you can live without. 

If there are certain things you want to keep, but don’t have the time to do, don’t be afraid to ask others to chip in.  Ask your friends and family to bring a dish to a meal to cut down on your cooking, or get your partner to help with the shopping.  You can also start a new tradition with your kids by adding them to the list of helpers.

After you’re done with your to-do list, use that to work out a holiday budget.  If you don’t, you could spend the whole season spending too much, then worrying about how much you’re spending.  Be realistic about what you want to do and how much you want to spend.  The most important part about the budget is sticking with it.  While this may be a struggle now, it’s less of a struggle than trying to come up with money you don’t have.

A great way to cut down on stress is to cut down on holiday treats.  Not only can those goodies cause you to stress out about packing on the pounds, they can wreak havoc on your mood as well.  All that sugar can get your blood sugar levels out of whack, and the bounce back will leave you sluggish.  Instead of indulging on treats, try making your own healthy snacks to enjoy and even share with others.  Also remember to eat three healthy meals a day to keep you energy up.

There’s one item you probably forgot off your holiday to-do list that you need to add:  taking a break.  We often fill our time so tightly, we forget to budget some for ourselves.  Whether it’s having a bubble bath, going to the gym, or simply sitting in your living room listening to relaxing music, take time to do something for yourself.  You’ll probably find you can get the other things on your list done faster when you’re relaxed and energized.

No matter what you do, the holidays are probably going to be more stressful than the rest of the year.  However, if you plan ahead and make an effort to relax, you can get through them without being totally burnt out for the New Year.
